More than two-thirds of parliament members sign up to elect Iraq’s president on Monday

On Friday, 220 members of the House of Representatives submitted a list of their names and signatures to the Speaker of the House, demanding that a session be held next Monday to elect the President of the Republic.
The MPs, representing more than two-thirds of the members of the House of Representatives, explained in a letter to the Speaker of the House, as reported by Shafaq News Agency, that their demand to allocate a session on Monday to elect the President of the Republic comes in accordance with the provisions of the Iraqi Constitution, its constitutional entitlements, and in response to the requirements of the current stage.
The letter stated that “the continued vacancy of the position of President of the Republic represents a disruption to the course of constitutional entitlements and negatively affects the regularity of the work of the constitutional authorities, which necessitates expediting the completion of this important national entitlement, in order to ensure the stability of the political process and enhance citizens’ confidence in state institutions and the representatives who represent them.”
The signatories stressed “the need to include the item of electing the President of the Republic in the agenda of the aforementioned session, and to take all necessary measures to ensure that it is held on the specified date.”
The coordinating framework that brings together the ruling Shiite political forces in Iraq agreed to postpone deciding on a prime ministerial candidate until after the end of the ongoing regional war between the United States and Israel against Iran, according to a political source who spoke to Shafaq News Agency earlier.
The Coordination Framework had officially nominated Maliki on January 24, a move that opened the door to negotiations to form the new government, but the process faltered as disagreements continued over the election of the President of the Republic, the constitutional entitlement that precedes assigning the candidate of the largest bloc to form the government.
