Minister of Transport Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi stated on Tuesday that the activation of the TIR Agreement is an important message to the countries of the world, while pointing out that the activation of the agreement is a great success for the Iraqi government. Al-Saadawi told the official agency, “The reactivation of the international land transport (TIR) in Iraq after a 40-year hiatus is an important historical event and a success that adds to the successes of the services government,” noting that “the activation of the TIR Agreement in Iraq is an important message to all countries of the world that Iraq is safe, stable and open to international trade.”
He added that “activating the TIR Agreement in Iraq means returning it to the global trade map and restoring it to its international standing,” noting that it “is an important message to all investors and the private sector to invest in Iraq.”
He also stressed that “Iraq has become a safe passage for international trade, and that the activation of the TIR Agreement is a successful introduction and an element of the success of the Development Road project, this major strategic project launched by Iraq for inter-trade and linking the East and West,” noting that “the implementation of this agreement is a great success for the Iraqi government and an important message to all countries of the world that Iraq has become a safe and stable international passage for international trade.”
The Minister of Transport had previously confirmed that the government, under the supervision and support of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, has worked for more than two years to rehabilitate the land transport infrastructure with the aim of improving the efficiency of cross-border freight transport.
Al-Saadawi noted that the TIR system will contribute to reducing transportation time by 80% and reducing costs by approximately 38%, especially since Iraq is a major transit corridor for goods arriving from countries that have joined the agreement. This will contribute to reducing the time and costs required to transport goods, and will provide thousands of job opportunities.
