Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, announced on Sunday that fiber optic cables will replace Wi-Fi across Iraq by next year, while indicating that efforts are underway to further reduce the price of internet service via fiber optic cables. Al-Yasiri told the official agency, “Shutdown of Wi-Fi does not mean shutting down the internet service, as some have promoted, but rather replacing it with fiber optic cables, as they are much faster and better than Wi-Fi, and we are striving to provide the best service to citizens.”
She added, “The ministry is currently in the process of gradually shutting down the Wi-Fi service, and we are working to shut down the Wi-Fi in every area that is equipped with an optical cable.” She continued, “According to the schedule and plans we have in place, the Wi-Fi will be completely shut down over the next year, and the use of optical cable will be fully adopted.”
She also noted that “the service has been improved dozens of times over the fiber optic cable, and we aspire to do even more.”
She also explained that “the prices of fiber optic cable are reasonable when compared to the subscription price and the internet speed provided. As for Wi-Fi, it is not suitable due to the lower quality and speed compared to fiber optic cable. Compared to other countries, such prices are not available. However, we aspire to further reductions by reducing infrastructure costs and making them almost free.”
