The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, who arrived in Erbil on Saturday, discussed the ongoing efforts and dialogues to form the new government.
The regional government said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that Masrour Barzani received Nouri al-Maliki today, indicating that the meeting discussed the overall situation in Iraq after the parliamentary elections, and the ongoing efforts and dialogues between political parties to form the new federal government.
Both sides also agreed on the importance of resolving outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and the Federal Government based on the constitution and signed agreements.
The Shura Council of the Islamic Dawa Party decided today, Saturday, unanimously, to nominate the party’s Secretary-General, Nouri al-Maliki, for the position of Prime Minister in the next Iraqi government.
The announcement coincided with Maliki’s arrival in Erbil for talks on forming a new government following the parliamentary elections held on November 11.
An informed source had previously revealed three prominent candidates for the premiership: current Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, State of Law Coalition leader Nouri al-Maliki, and Intelligence Service chief Hamid al-Shatri, indicating that next week will witness extensive political activity to decide on the three presidencies.
