Jassim Mohammed Jaafar, a leader in the State of Law Coalition, suggested on Sunday that the coordination framework would not reveal the name of its candidate for the position of Prime Minister at the present time, noting that the competition would remain limited to a small number of names until the selection of the Kurdish candidate for the position of President of the Republic is finalized.
Jaafar told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “announcing the framework’s candidate early may expose him to attempts at political discrediting, which makes it in the framework’s interest to postpone revealing the final name until the election of the president of the republic,” noting that “the constitution grants the president of the republic the authority to assign the candidate of the largest bloc to form the government.”
He added that “the framework is capable of deciding on its candidate’s name within a few days if necessary,” suggesting that “it is preferable to wait to decide on the presidential candidate to ensure that the candidate is not targeted in advance.”
It is worth noting that Jamal Kochar, a leader in the Kurdistan Islamic Union and a member of parliament, previously confirmed the ongoing disagreements between the two main Kurdish parties, the KDP and the PUK, which negatively impacts the possibility of agreeing on a Kurdish candidate for the presidency.
