A report by Lifetime magazine on Saturday revealed that US Democratic Representative Ro Khanna was detained by illegal Israeli settlers during a visit to the occupied West Bank.
The report, translated by the Information Agency, quoted Representative Khanna as saying, “His group’s bus was surrounded by settlers armed with M4 rifles the day before while they were touring a part of the southern West Bank where residents face frequent attacks from illegal settlers.”
Khanna, a progressive legislator from California in the US House of Representatives, added, “We were in a village that Israeli settlers had destroyed. They destroyed the school, they destroyed the entire village, and we were watching what was happening. Then these thugs came with machine guns—M4s, which are American-made machine guns—and detained us. They blocked the road and then called the Israeli army, and the Israeli army is on their side, not on the side of the Americans.”
Cameron Kaski, one of Khanna’s aides who was with the group, said they were detained for more than an hour and appealed to the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem for help. Kaski said a group of officers who appeared to be police eventually intervened, leading to their release.
The Israeli military said its forces and police intervened after receiving a report that settlers were obstructing traffic near Khirbet Zanuta, a small Palestinian village whose residents were forcibly displaced by violent settler attacks following Israel’s 2013 assault on the Gaza Strip.
Khanna is the second Democratic presidential hopeful to visit the region this week. In Tel Aviv on Wednesday, Rahm Emanuel, former chief of staff to President Barack Obama, said Israeli policies toward the Palestinians are undermining support for the U.S.-Israel alliance. When asked if he would run for president, Khanna said, “I’m seriously considering it, and I’m even more determined to think about it after this visit.”
Khanna added, “If you’re not prepared to stand up for Palestinian human rights, then…” If you were unwilling to condemn the genocide in Gaza and the apartheid regime in the West Bank, then you are a moral hypocrite.
