The Information Agency / Baghdad –
Legal expert Ali al-Tamimi confirmed on Thursday that the electoral judiciary is nearing completion of its review of all submitted appeals, paving the way for their submission to the Federal Court for a final ruling. He noted that the next phase will witness complex constitutional requirements, most notably the election of the president.
Al-Tamimi told the Information Agency, “Electing the president requires a parliamentary session with a two-thirds quorum of the House of Representatives, which represents the biggest obstacle in the current political process, as political discussions and understandings cannot override the clear constitutional provisions.”
He added, “The president, once elected, will be obligated to task the nominee of the largest parliamentary bloc with forming the government within a period not exceeding 15 days.”
Regarding the ongoing events in the Kurdistan Region, Al-Tamimi stressed that “the demonstrations taking place in the region are legal and constitutionally guaranteed, and any use of force against the demonstrators constitutes a clear violation of the constitution.” He emphasized that “the repression and forced displacement occurring in the region represent a dangerous development that necessitates a clear stance to protect the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Iraqi constitution.”
