Abdul Majeed Hashim al-Dulaimi, a leader in the Sovereignty Alliance, accused prominent party leaders in the Kurdistan Region on Friday of being behind the largest oil smuggling operations outside Iraq. He pointed to the involvement of leaders from the two main parties, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), led by Masoud Barzani, in these activities.
Al-Dulaimi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “mafias led by people close to Masoud Barzani are overseeing the smuggling of huge quantities of petroleum products via a fleet of tanker trucks moving from Erbil to Sulaymaniyah and from there out of the country, under the protection of Peshmerga forces.”
He added, “Smuggling operations enjoy tight security protection from Asayish and Peshmerga forces. Smugglers carry badges issued by the regional government that allow them to pass through checkpoints without hindrance, and they are even provided with assistance when needed.”
Al-Dulaimi pointed out that “Barzani moved the smuggling operations from Erbil to Sulaymaniyah to sell oil to organized networks that transport it through irregular ports and away from the control of the central government,” noting that “these smuggling networks carry out daily smuggling operations of thousands of trucks loaded with oil and selling them to specialized parties outside Iraq.”
