The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation announced on Thursday that it has lifted all “force majeure” notices it had issued during the war, confirming that the decision came into effect immediately with the improvement of conditions and the resumption of commercial shipping in the region.
The corporation said it plans to increase oil production to two million barrels per day within one week, coinciding with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the resumption of normal international commercial shipping.
She added that repairs to the damage to the oil infrastructure have been completed, which will contribute to accelerating the return to previous production levels and enhancing the sector’s ability to meet demand.
The announcement comes as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi spoke with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah to discuss the agreement signed by Tehran and Washington, in their first publicly announced contact since the start of the war.
Al-Sabah expressed his country’s hope that the memorandum of understanding would contribute to “strengthening stability in the region, ensuring the security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and addressing outstanding issues by reaching sustainable solutions,” according to a statement issued by the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Kuwait’s top diplomat stressed the importance of “adhering to the principles of good neighborliness” and respecting the sovereignty of states, as well as refraining from interfering in internal affairs.
For his part, Araqchi stressed the need to continue dialogue with the Gulf states in order to “strengthen mutual cooperation and resolve existing ambiguities,” according to a statement issued by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
Kuwait was among the Gulf states targeted by Iranian attacks following the announcement of a ceasefire between Iran and the United States last April.
The latest attack occurred last week, when Iran announced it had launched airstrikes targeting US air bases in Kuwait and Bahrain early Thursday morning.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian remotely signed a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran to end the war and open the Strait of Hormuz, in a move that preceded a ceremony that was scheduled to take place in Switzerland, and opened the door to broader negotiations on the nuclear issue and sanctions during a period of 60 days.
