Shafaq News/ Reuters revealed on Thursday that the meeting held in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, regarding the resumption of Kurdistan Region oil exports ended without reaching an agreement.
The Iraqi Oil Ministry hosted talks aimed at accelerating the resumption of oil exports from the Kurdistan Region, after they were postponed until Thursday due to disagreements between oil companies and the Iraqi Oil Ministry over terms.
Reuters reported, according to five informed sources, that an American diplomat will attend a meeting scheduled in Baghdad today, Thursday, regarding the resumption of oil exports from the Kurdistan Region via the Turkish Ceyhan pipeline, in light of Washington’s efforts to pressure for the resumption of exports.
One of the sources, an official in the Iraqi Oil Ministry with direct knowledge of the meeting, explained that the presence of the American diplomat, who works at the American embassy in Baghdad, came in response to a request from Washington.
The White House National Security Office declined to comment on the matter.
The oil ministry official said: “The presence of the American diplomat aims to push the negotiations forward and find solutions to the issues that hinder the resumption of oil exports in a way that satisfies all parties.”
Reuters revealed last month that Iraq is under increasing American pressure to allow the resumption of oil exports from the Kurdistan Region via Turkey, with the aim of boosting supplies in the global market, at a time when Washington is seeking to reduce Iranian oil exports as part of its efforts to curb Tehran’s nuclear program.
Iran considers Iraq a major neighbor and ally that helps it overcome the economic sanctions imposed on it.
However, the sources told Reuters that Baghdad, another US ally, fears falling into the crosshairs of the US policy aimed at pressuring Tehran.
“There is a strong determination on the American side to ensure the success of the negotiations to resume Kurdish oil exports by any means. We hope that the American role will contribute to reaching an agreement acceptable to the Iraqi government,” said a government official familiar with the talks.
