Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei announced on Thursday a “new management” for the Strait of Hormuz that will bring “calm and economic benefits” to the region, stressing his country’s determination to “secure” the Gulf region, coinciding with calls from the Revolutionary Guard to keep foreign powers away from the region, amid escalating tensions with the United States.
In a statement published on the “X” platform, Khamenei said that the American presence is the main reason for instability and insecurity in the region, considering the deployment of American forces in the Gulf states to be the source of tension.
He added that “a new chapter is taking shape in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,” stressing that Iran shares a common destiny with its neighbors, and that it will work to “secure the Gulf region” and end what he described as the enemy’s violations of the waterway.
He noted that “the new administration of the Strait of Hormuz will bring calm and progress, as well as economic benefits to all Gulf states,” adding that the region’s future would be without the American presence.
For its part, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, in a statement on the occasion of what is known as “National Persian Gulf Day,” stressed that the security of the Gulf can only be achieved through regional cooperation between the countries bordering it, and without the presence of foreign powers.
The Revolutionary Guard described the Gulf as the economic, energy and communications lifeline of the region, calling for the maintenance of stability and sustainable security through the “collective wisdom and effective participation” of the region’s countries.
This comes after US President Donald Trump earlier today reposted an image on Truth Social in which he referred to the Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait,” in a move described as a new escalation.
Two days ago, Tehran proposed reopening the strait in exchange for lifting the American blockade on its ports and ending the war, while postponing discussions on its nuclear program. This proposal was not accepted by Washington, amid anticipation of a possible American response.
