Jordanian Electricity - The interconnection project with Iraq is nearing completion with a capacity of 200 megawattsShafaq News/ The Director General of the Jordanian National Electric Power Company, Sufyan Batayneh, revealed on Tuesday the progress of work on the second phase of the electricity interconnection project between Jordan and Iraq, while confirming that it has almost reached the final stages.

In statements to the Jordanian News Agency (Petra), seen by Shafaq News Agency, Al-Batayneh expected the entire phase of work to be completed, which aims to supply the Al-Qaim region in Iraq with 400 kilovolt electricity, by the end of next August.

He added that “the amount of energy that will be supplied to the Iraqi side after the project’s completion may reach approximately 150-200 megawatts,” indicating that “the project comes as part of efforts to enhance regional integration in the energy sector, as the Jordanian electricity system is linked simultaneously with the Egyptian electricity grid via a 550 megavolt submarine cable, in addition to linking it to the Syrian electricity grid via an overhead transmission line.”

Al-Batayneh continued, “The Rutba region in Iraq is currently being supplied with electricity from the Risha substation in Jordan, with loads estimated at approximately 40 megawatts.”

It’s worth noting that the Jordanian Ministry of National Electricity confirmed, at the beginning of 2023, that it would be ready to connect with Iraq in August of the same year.

The director of the Jordanian National Electric Power Company, Amjad Al-Rawashdeh, said at the time that “the interconnection project with Iraq is proceeding as planned, with the first phase on the Jordanian side completing next August.”

In May 2023, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced that the connection with Jordan would be operational in early July, confirming that the project aims to supply Iraq with 150 megawatts in its first phase, increasing to 500 megawatts in the second phase, and 900 megawatts in the third.
