Israeli officials reported on Saturday that an assassination attempt had been made against Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, as well as other prominent figures in Iranian political and military circles.
Axios quoted Israeli officials as saying that “the Iranian Supreme Leader and President Pezeshkian were among the targets hit by the Israeli raids,” noting that “the investigation is still ongoing to confirm the results of the attacks.”
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority stated that “Ali Shamkhani, the Supreme Leader’s advisor, was among those targeted in the assassination operations.”
In contrast, Iranian media reported that “Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi is safe.”
It is noted that Iranian reports stated on Saturday morning that President Masoud Pezeshkian is in good health, following the Israeli-American bombing that targeted sites near the presidential headquarters in Tehran.
An Iranian official, according to Reuters, confirmed that Ali Khamenei had been moved to a safe location outside the capital, without disclosing further details.
Reuters also quoted a source as saying that “the main objective of the first wave of US-Israeli attacks was to target Iranian officials.”
Israel announced this morning that it had carried out what it described as a “preemptive” attack on Iran, while a US official confirmed the participation of US air forces in joint strikes aimed at dismantling the Iranian security apparatus, expecting the operations to be large-scale.
Iranian media reported explosions in central Tehran and thick smoke rising near the government complex in the Pasteur area, with reports of missiles falling in the vicinity of vital areas, partial communications outages, and the closure of Iranian airspace until further notice, without an official announcement of the extent of the damage.
