Iraqs lungs are about to suffocate - Al-Salami warns against plans to abandon Khor AbdullahInformation/Baghdad:
MP Haider al-Salami warned on Monday of what he described as “dangerous” repercussions if the Khor Abdullah agreement is abandoned. He emphasized that the issue represents Iraq’s sole maritime lifeline on the Arabian Gulf, and abandoning it would constitute a direct threat to the country’s strategic interests.

Al-Salami told Al-Maalouma, “Our pressure and support for the cancellation of the Khor Abdullah agreement is based on fundamental justifications that affect Iraq’s interests, especially since the Khor Abdullah is Iraq’s only maritime lung on the Gulf.” He added, “Some leaders of political blocs are putting pressure on parliamentarians to abandon this issue despite their awareness of its seriousness.”

He added, “Continuing with these pressures will cost Iraq dearly, including the possibility of the Iraqi flag being removed from ships and the imposition of additional financial costs, which will diminish the importance of Iraqi exported goods and weaken national ports in the face of fierce regional competition.”

Al-Salami pointed out that “the pressure we are exerting stems from a deep sense of responsibility toward future generations, and we cannot ignore any step that threatens the future of Iraqi ports or stifles the country’s maritime traffic.” He emphasized that “the recent Federal Court ruling must be submitted by the government to the United Nations to renegotiate the corridor and guarantee Iraq’s rights.”

He concluded by saying, “Khawr Abdullah is not just a waterway, but rather Basra and Iraq’s window to the Gulf, and any concession to it would mean economic and sovereign strangulation that is unacceptable under any circumstances.”
