Iraqi Planning announces good news and notes two dates for announcing census resultsShafaq News/ The Iraqi Ministry of Planning announced on Sunday that the poverty rate in the country has declined as a result of the policies implemented by the government, while noting the date of announcing the final results of the general population and housing census.

The ministry’s spokesman, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, told Shafak News Agency, “Poverty rates have witnessed a decrease during the past two years. After being 21.5 percent in 2022, the poverty rate recorded 17.6 percent in 2024. This came as a result of the policies implemented by the government, which led to a decline in the poverty rate in Iraq.”

Regarding the poverty rate according to the latest population census, Al-Hindawi explained that it “will be announced on February 26, at the level of Iraq and at the level of each governorate, where the results of the economic and social survey will be announced, which includes indicators of poverty and unemployment. As for February 24, it is the date for announcing the results of the general population and housing census.”

Iraq conducted its first comprehensive population census in 37 years on November 20 and 21, 2024. The Iraqi government announced that Iraq’s population had reached more than 45 million people, and that the population growth rate was 2.3%.

On November 25, 2024, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced that the country’s population, according to the general population and housing census, reached 45,407,495 people, including foreigners and refugees, explaining that the number of families reached 7 million, 898 thousand, and 588 families.

Al-Sudani said in a press conference followed by Shafaq News Agency, “The number of males reached 22 million, 784 thousand, and 62 people, representing 50.1 percent, while the number of females reached 22 million, 623 thousand, and 833 people, representing 49.8 percent.”

The Prime Minister stated that “the number of housing units in Iraq reached 8 million, 37 thousand, and 221 units,” explaining that “the percentage of floors is 92.1, the percentage of apartments is 6.6 percent, and the percentage of mud floors is 4 per cent of a percent.”

He explained that “the percentage of the population under working age, less than 15 years, is 36.1 percent,” noting that “the percentage of the population over working age, 65 years and over, is 3.7 percent.”
