Iraqi Oil: Chemchemal Field is the Largest and Cleanest Gas Field in the Country

Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil, Izzat Saber, confirmed on Tuesday that the Kurdistan Region has huge reserves of natural gas, noting that the Chamchamal field is the largest and most important gas field in Iraq, thanks to the purity of its gas, which reaches 97%.
Saber explained, in a statement received by Shafak News Agency, that “the Kurdistan Region enjoys enormous gas wealth, and it possesses some of the purest types of natural gas, which makes it a strategic resource that can be better invested to serve citizens.”
He pointed out that the Jamjamal field is one of the largest gas fields in Iraq, as it is characterised by high-purity gas that can be used directly.
He added that Iraq relies on gas to generate about 45% of its electricity, and has reserves that enable it to benefit from this wealth for a period of up to 100 years.
Despite these great capabilities, the electricity crisis in Iraq still exists, as the country suffers from a lack of electricity 24 hours a day.
Saber explained that the solution to this problem is not limited to increasing production, but rather requires restructuring the electricity sector and improving consumption in coordination between the government and citizens, to ensure the exploitation of gas resources more efficiently.
He also pointed out that the Iraqi government is currently working to find alternatives to Iranian gas, with the possibility of importing natural gas from Qatar when needed.
