The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced on Tuesday the development of an integrated plan to establish power stations to produce (48) thousand megawatts, confirming the achievement of agreements and contracts to begin implementing the project with international companies.

The official spokesman for the Ministry, Ahmed Musa Al-Abadi, said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, “The Ministry of Electricity has developed an integrated plan to establish stations to produce (48) thousand new megawatts of energy, and has achieved agreements and contracts that were actually signed to begin the construction and implementation stages.”

Al-Abadi explained that “the ministry has developed an integrated plan to establish stations to produce (48) thousand megawatts,” indicating that this step comes within the framework of direct contracting with parent companies, after ending dealings with intermediaries, which contributed to simplifying procedures and accelerating implementation stages, which will positively reflect on raising the production and operational capabilities of the energy system in the country.”

Al-Abadi pointed out that “the ministry has adopted a long-term program for periodic maintenance in cooperation with international companies implementing previous projects, to ensure sustained performance and operational efficiency, and reduce operational maintenance costs for generating stations.” He explained that “the ministry has organized specialized workshops to discuss the best ways to meet the growing demand for electricity and keep pace with modern technological developments in the fields of production, transmission, and distribution.”

He explained that “the ministry has concluded strategic contracts with reputable international companies such as Vernova, Siemens, and Shanghai, which include the construction of new power generation plants and the implementation of long-term maintenance programs.” He noted that “these projects will be implemented within a three- to five-year plan, based on precise technical studies related to the distribution of electrical loads, determining appropriate locations for the plants, and ensuring the provision of the necessary fuel in parallel with plans for the reliability of the transmission network.”

Al-Abadi added, “Through these contracts, the ministry seeks to diversify energy sources, while improving the efficiency of existing plants and increasing their operational capacity to meet the needs of the country’s growing population and economic growth.” He emphasized that “the ministry is focused on applying global efficiency standards in design and implementation to ensure project sustainability.”

He stressed that “the Ministry is continuing to improve the energy sector’s infrastructure by developing networks and employing the latest gas-fired and combined-cycle generation technologies, in addition to providing specialized training programs for technical and engineering personnel with the aim of transferring knowledge and building national capabilities, thus contributing to supporting the implementation of the strategic energy plan scheduled to be implemented in the coming years.”
