Iraq spends billions of dollars on meat... Al-Jubouri reveals opportunities for self-sufficiencyInformation/Special…
Former member of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Water, Thaer al-Jubouri, confirmed on Saturday that Iraq spends between two and three billion dollars annually on importing red meat, poultry, and fish. He indicated that this money could contribute to creating more than 100,000 job opportunities if a strategy were adopted to achieve self-sufficiency and protect local products.
Al-Jubouri explained to Al-Maalouma that “Iraq, according to the indicators available to us, spends between two and three billion dollars annually on importing red meat, poultry, and fish from several sources, especially neighboring countries.”
He added that “all the potential for the success of the self-sufficiency experiment is available, but it requires three main factors: protecting local products, stopping smuggling operations from certain areas, and supporting domestic production by providing loans and adopting modern technologies and methods in dealing with these sectors.”
Al-Jubouri pointed out that “these sectors could provide at least 100,000 job opportunities within the country, thus creating a strong and sustainable economic sector that could be the beginning of moving to the export stage.”
He pointed out that “Iraq possesses a vast environment with all the ingredients for success, but what is needed is effective management and well-defined plans that directly protect local products, thereby contributing to self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on imports.”
