This came during the chairmanship of the Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab Abdullah, of the first meeting of the Steering Committee to launch the first update project for the strategic study of water and land resources in Iraq, in the presence of the Italian Ambassador to Iraq, Maurizio Griganti, Representative Sanaa Al-Lahibi, and the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Water and Marshes, in the hall of the General Authority for Irrigation and Reclamation Projects.

The Minister of Water Resources said in his speech that “the ministry has contracted with a coalition of the Italian Hydronova and Jordanian Concorde companies to launch a project to update the strategic study concerned with preparing a national roadmap for developing water resources and improving their use, while he pointed to determining and setting a timetable for implementing and rehabilitating the necessary infrastructure to achieve water, food and energy security and preserve the environment.”

He added that “water resources are a vital artery for the sustainability of economic, social and environmental development, while pointing out that in light of the rapid climate changes, population growth and challenges, it was necessary to update the strategic study to adapt to the changes and facts on the ground and to face current and future challenges.”

He explained that “the success of the project depends largely on cooperation between all parties concerned with the water sector and unifying efforts to achieve common goals and implement their outcomes in a way that achieves building a sustainable future for our coming generations.”

For his part, the Italian ambassador said, “The project is a decisive step towards securing a sustainable water future for Iraq, in addition to developing vital irrigation systems, addressing the impact of climate change on rivers, addressing salinity levels in the Shatt al-Arab, and enhancing the capacity and safety of the Mosul Dam and all Iraqi artificial water basins.”

The celebration also included a screening of an explanatory film highlighting the achievements of the strategic study and the main areas for modernization, as well as a speech by Andrea Cattaruzzi, head of the consulting team for preparing the study.
