The Central Bank of Iraq’s sales of foreign currency declined by 36% during the first five months of 2026, reaching $22.531 billion, compared to $35.201 billion during the same period in 2025.

Data from the Central Bank of Iraq, reviewed by Shafaq News Agency, showed that the bank’s sales during the period from January to May 2026 were distributed as follows: $1.038 billion in cash sales, compared to $21.493 billion to boost banks’ balances outside the foreign currency sales window, while no sales were recorded through transfers or international settlements.

For the month of May 2026, the central bank’s sales amounted to $5.191 billion, down from $6.937 billion in the previous April, and from $7.010 billion in May 2025.

Last May’s sales were distributed as follows: $250 million in cash sales, while the item for strengthening bank balances outside the foreign currency sales window accounted for $4.941 billion, which constituted the largest part of the total monthly sales.
