Economic expert Safwan Qusay confirmed on Monday that Iraq plans to raise its oil production to 9.5 million barrels per day, while investing the surplus revenues in infrastructure projects.
Qusay told Al-Maalouma, “Iraq currently produces about 4.7 million barrels of oil per day, and there is domestic consumption. The more this consumption decreases, the more exports will be strengthened, especially through new outlets by reviving export lines through Syria towards the Mediterranean, as well as through the Red Sea.”
He added, “Iraq aims to raise production to 6.5 million barrels per day within three years, by contracting with oil companies to develop existing fields and increase the quantities produced.”
He indicated that “Iraq may approach achieving 9.5 million barrels per day in the next phase, which will contribute to increasing oil revenues and investing the surplus in infrastructure projects, especially since the country has suffered from weak investment in this vital sector since the 1980s.”
