The Green Iraq Observatory said on Saturday that Iraq needs more than three months of high rainfall to try to raise water levels in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and the dams and reservoirs that have been almost completely emptied of water.

A statement from the observatory, received by Shafaq News Agency, said that “the current government has completely forgotten the water issue in favor of political and economic issues and conflicts, which has led to its exacerbation at the present time, so that drought is affecting not only the southern governorates, but has begun to extend to reach the western regions, north of Baghdad and others.

He added that “the water file is going through its worst phase, as Iraq is facing the most severe crisis in 90 years, according to the Minister of Water Resources,” indicating that the water reserves may decrease during the coming months to less than 4 percent if the rainfall is delayed in Baghdad and the provinces.

He stressed that rainfall in varying amounts may not solve the issue of rising water levels in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, regulators, and dams, because Iraq needs a quantity that extends for more than 3 months at least, with high rainfall rates, so that Iraq is sufficient for the coming summer season, for agriculture, and for consumption.

The observatory warned that Iraq is being deceived a second time by Turkey after it agreed to release one billion cubic meters of water into the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Such a large quantity could be released to Iraq “without compensation,” noting that Turkey wants to exert more pressure on Iraq to make more political, security and economic concessions in the coming period.
