Iraq joins the TIR system for cross-border land transportShafaq News/ The Border Ports Authority announced, on Tuesday, that Iraq has joined the technically integrated TIR system and activated international cross-border transport operations, in partnership with the International Road Transport Union.

The authority stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, “Under the direct supervision of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, international cross-border transport operations have been activated, in partnership with the International Road Transport Union and under the umbrella of the TIR system, which is technically integrated with government systems across all land, air and sea border crossings.”

She explained that “two international transport trials were conducted across Iraqi territory. The first began from Mersin Port in Turkey to Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi, passing through Iraqi territory. The second began from Europe, specifically Poland, the country of departure, passing through Turkey and Iraq, and from there to Jordan and Saudi Arabia, before arriving in the UAE, the destination country.”

She stressed that “the operation was a great success and its feasibility was proven, as it saved time and reduced costs and will generate (non-oil) government revenues for Iraq.”

She added, “This international trade corridor, using Iraqi territory, is an addition to a series of other international corridors and transportation routes, achieved thanks to government efforts to ensure security and the cooperation of the ministries concerned with transportation, ports, and customs.”

The Authority noted that “transit transportation achieves economic and social development by providing job opportunities along roads and transportation corridors within Iraq, which will provide employment opportunities for all segments of the population.”
