MP Ali Al-Lami confirmed on Wednesday that Iraq has made great strides in reducing the flaring of associated gas during oil extraction operations, noting that the country will be able to reduce this phenomenon by up to 80% by the beginning of 2026.
Al-Lami explained in a statement to Al-Maalouma that “Iraq, for decades, has been burning huge quantities of associated gas in oil fields, especially in the southern and northern regions, causing serious environmental damage and financial losses estimated at billions of dollars annually,” noting that “this gas can be invested in generating electricity or exported, which opens up broad economic prospects.”
He explained that “cooperation with specialized international companies, along with the accelerated pace of work on this file, has contributed significantly to reaching an advanced percentage of completion, expecting that the final stage will be completed in the first quarter of 2026, with the remaining stages to be completed later.”
Al-Lami concluded by emphasizing that “completing these steps will yield significant financial gains and contribute to reducing harmful emissions, which is a major achievement in protecting the environment and strengthening the national economy.”
