Iraq is close to achieving self-sufficiency in 6 agricultural crops

The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed, on Thursday, that it had achieved a surplus in the production of several crops and exported them abroad, while indicating that Iraq was close to achieving self-sufficiency in 6 important crops, including tomatoes and potatoes.
The ministry’s spokesman, Mohammed Al-Khazai, told the official agency, which was followed by Al-Maalouma, “Many crops achieved an abundance of production during the last agricultural season, which we called the peak season, including fruits, as we exported 4,000 tons of them.”
He added, “More than 70,000 tons of vegetable crops were also exported, and date exports increased in 2024 to 730,000 tons after they were 650,000 tons in 2023.”
He added, “We are close to achieving self-sufficiency in other important crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, and dates. We will achieve self-sufficiency in potatoes and tomatoes throughout the year in preparation for stopping their export.”
