Iraq extends airspace closure until Sunday eveningShafaq News/ A security source reported on Saturday evening that the closure of Iraqi airspace will be extended until 7:00 PM on Sunday, following an assessment of the situation by the authorities.

The Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority announced earlier today that it would extend the closure of Iraqi airspace, exempting Basra during daylight hours only.

The authority said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, “It was decided to extend the ban on Iraqi airspace to all incoming and outgoing flights until 7:00 PM Baghdad time.”

She added, “With the exception of Basra International Airport, flights are only permitted during daylight hours.”

The Ministry of Transport also announced, in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, that “southern Iraqi airspace has been opened to aircraft landing and departing to Basra International Airport, during daylight hours only, after a period of precautionary closure resulting from regional security tensions.”

She added, “The opening of Iraq’s southern airspace to aircraft landing and departing at Basra International Airport, during daylight hours only, came after a comprehensive assessment of the weather and security conditions, and in coordination with relevant authorities, to ensure the safety of air navigation and aircraft arriving and departing from Basra Airport, in line with international civil aviation safety standards.”

She explained that “opening the southern airspace is the first step in a gradual plan to reopen Iraqi airspace, in accordance with ongoing technical and security assessments, while emphasizing that the safety of passengers and civil aviation remains a top priority.”
