Iraq declares its sufficiency of wheat without the need to import this year

Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture announced, on Sunday, that the country will be satisfied with the wheat crop for the food basket, without the need for imports during the current year 2023.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry, Mithaq Abdul-Hussein Al-Khafaji, told Shafaq News agency, that the Iraqi government has set sums of money to support farmers and agricultural crops in the general budget law.
And he indicated that wheat production this year amounted to more than 5 million tons, which is a sufficient amount to support the food basket without the need for the ministry to import.
Al-Khafaji affirmed his ministry’s determination next year to increase support for farmers, despite the challenges of climate change and high temperatures.
He pointed out that the ministry will change the traditional methods that used to respond to the abundance of water, through the use of mechanisms and equipment that can adapt to the scarcity of water, which guarantees increased production.
The Minister of Agriculture, Abbas Al-Olaywi, had told Shafaq News agency, in a previous statement, that the officially cultivated areas in Iraq amounted to about 8 million dunums, distributed among about 4 million dunums in desert lands, and another 2.5 million dunums in irrigated lands, and in the recent period It has been cultivated by about 1.5 million acres in many Iraqi governorates.
And the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture announced, in mid-May, the success of the marketing season for the 2022-2023 wheat crop, and confirmed the smooth delivery of all dues of farmers and farmers.
