Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani stated on Wednesday that his government has succeeded in converting approximately 40 percent of Iraq’s oil production into downstream and refining industries.

This came during his launch of the implementation works of the Nineveh Refinery Project, with a refining capacity of 70,000 barrels per day, during his visit to Nineveh Governorate.

Al-Sudani said that during the past two and a half years, refining capacity has jumped more than expected, as part of the government’s plans to convert 40% of oil production into transformational and refining industries, and we have exceeded the percentage (30-35%), and this percentage was planned within the next 10 years, stressing that the government assumed its duties and Iraq imports petroleum derivatives worth 6 trillion dinars for a country that produces 4 million barrels of oil per day.

The Nineveh Refinery facilities will be built on an area of 800 dunams in the Hammam al-Alil district, south of Mosul. It will contribute to meeting the needs of the northern governorates. Its units will also produce various petroleum derivatives, such as fuel oil with a capacity of 32,000 barrels/day, naphtha with 15,000 barrels/day, kerosene with 8,400 barrels/day, and gas oil with 12,600 barrels/day. The project will also provide approximately 1,000 direct job opportunities and a larger number of indirect job opportunities.

Al-Sudani also launched the implementation of the Qayyarah Combined Cycle Power Plant expansion project, which will add 375 megawatts, bringing the plant’s total production capacity to 1,125 megawatts.

He emphasized the importance of this project, which will contribute to raising the level of energy generation within the national grid. He also noted that the government’s move to rely on combined cycle power plants will yield multiple benefits, as it increases production levels of consumable fuel and takes environmental constraints into account.

The project, located in the Qayyarah district, south of Nineveh Governorate, is considered a vital project, as it will supply the national grid with electricity by utilizing the gases emitted from the simple cycle. It consists of three combined cycle units with a capacity of 125 megawatts each, while the simple cycle consists of six gas units with a capacity of 125 megawatts each.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani inaugurated Mosul International Airport this morning, Wednesday, according to a statement issued by the Iraqi government.

Al-Sudani also launched the implementation works for the Nineveh Refinery Project in Hammam Al-Alil, with a capacity of 70,000 barrels per day.
