Iraq completes ratification of maritime agreements by depositing “load lines” internationally

The Ministry of Transport announced, today, Friday, that Iraq has ratified all international maritime agreements, with the deposit of the Load Lines Agreement with the International Maritime Organization.
A statement by the ministry received by {Euphrates News} stated that “the Director General of the General Company for Iraqi Ports, Farhan Al-Fartousi, announced Iraq’s deposit of the Load Line Convention with the International Maritime Organization.”
Al-Fartousi said, according to the statement: “In line with the directives of the Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, Iraq has deposited the Load Line Convention with the International Maritime Organization,” noting that “this step comes within the framework of Iraq’s ongoing efforts to adhere to international standards.”
He explained that “under this agreement, Iraq has completed ratification of all agreements and protocols covered by the mandatory audit system for member states of the International Maritime Organization,” stressing that “Iraq will be subject to this audit in November 2025, which demonstrates its full commitment to the goals of the Maritime Organization in sustainable development, preservation of the marine environment, and maritime safety and security.”
For his part, Deputy Permanent Representative of Iraq to the International Maritime Organization, Marine Captain Mazen Al-Kaabi, said, “With the authorization of the Iraqi Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, and the Permanent Representative of Iraq to the International Maritime Organization, we deposited the Load Line Convention of 1966 and its amended Protocol of 1988, which are the last agreements ratified by Iraq since 2021.”
He added, “The number of agreements and protocols ratified by Iraq has reached (18) agreements and protocols so far.”
The statement added that “Iraq will be subject to mandatory audit by the International Maritime Organization (IMSAS) in October 2025, where experts from the organization will evaluate Iraq’s commitment to international maritime agreements,” stressing that “this process aims to re-include Iraq in the white list of member states of the International Maritime Organization, which enhances Iraq’s position in the international community and reflects its full commitment to global environmental and marine goals.”
