The Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee announced on Tuesday that Iraq’s refining capacity has reached a “new record high,” noting that self-sufficiency in gasoline will be achieved by the end of this year.
Committee member Ali Al-Mashkoor said, “This record figure reached nearly one and a half million barrels per day, reflecting remarkable progress in the local oil industry. This has contributed significantly to reducing Iraq’s dependence on imported petroleum products, as self-sufficiency in gas oil (kerosene), diesel, and kerosene has been achieved, with a portion of production allocated for export.”
Al-Mashkoor explained that “the refinery expansion plan aims to achieve an export surplus after the completion of existing projects, including the Diwaniyah and southern refineries, which will provide significant funds to the state treasury by reducing the import bill and converting crude oil into value-added petroleum products.”
He pointed out that Iraq still imports about (15%) of regular gasoline and (80%) of improved gasoline, with about (25) million liters of derivatives entering the local market daily.
He added, “Several projects will end the import of gasoline during the first half of (2025), including the fourth unit in the southern refineries, which produces about (4) million liters per day.”
Regarding natural gas, Al-Mashkoor stressed that “Iraq aims to achieve self-sufficiency by the year 2027 through gas processing projects in Basra, which will add large quantities of liquefied gas and condensates.”
