On Sunday, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard decided to close the Strait of Hormuz until further notice.
The Revolutionary Guard said in a statement that “foreign interference in determining the routes of ships within the Strait of Hormuz will lead to decisive measures,” noting that several ships ignored warnings and tried to sail in an unauthorized route, despite its demand that they correct their course and adhere to the approved route.
He added that “one of the ships, which endangered maritime security after disabling its systems, was subjected to warning shots, which led to its being stopped,” stressing that “due to the unstable security situation resulting from illegal foreign interference, it was decided to close the Strait of Hormuz until further notice, and until the end of American interference in the region, and no ship will be allowed to pass through it.”
The Revolutionary Guard vowed to “respond strongly in the event of any new attack on Iran,” indicating that it would target “the enemy’s new bases in the region.” The statement also held the countries that allowed “the American-Zionist enemy” to enter their territories responsible for the consequences.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most strategic waterways in the world and represents the only sea passage from the Gulf to the open ocean. Iran is located on the northern coast of the strait, while the Musandam Peninsula is located on the southern coast, which is jointly administered by the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman.
About one-third of the world’s total liquefied natural gas and about 20% of the world’s traded oil pass through the strait, making it a strategically vital location in international trade.
