Iranian state media suggested on Friday that Tehran’s negotiations with Washington in the Omani capital, Muscat, would continue for several days .
Iranian television, in breaking news reported by Shafaq News Agency, said that “negotiations are still ongoing and may take longer,” noting that “the Omani side is conveying messages between the Iranian and American delegations .”
According to Iranian television, “The atmosphere in the negotiations is more serious than in the previous round, and if we (Iran) reach a joint statement, it will be a step forward .”
Iranian television also quoted officials who attended the negotiations in Muscat as saying that they concerned reducing the concentration of uranium in Iran, noting that there was some speculation about the enrichment level.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced earlier on Friday that the first round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States had begun in Muscat .
According to media reports, the head of the Iranian delegation, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, held talks with his Omani counterpart, Badr Al Busaidi, prior to the start of negotiations .
For its part, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that Araqchi explained to the Omani Foreign Minister Iran’s viewpoint, proposals, demands and observations within the framework of negotiations with Washington .
Meanwhile, the deputy commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Major General Ahmad Vahidi, said that “the negotiations are limited to the nuclear file .”
In contrast, the Wall Street Journal reported that “the commander of the US Central Command will join the negotiations with Iran in Muscat .”
It is worth noting that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last Wednesday that Washington wants the talks to include Iran’s nuclear program, its ballistic missiles, its support for armed groups throughout the region, as well as its “treatment of its own people .”
While Iran says it wants Araqchi and US Middle East envoy Steve Wittkopf to discuss only nuclear issues in Muscat, it stressed that it will participate in the talks “from a position of strength and with the aim of reaching a fair and mutually acceptable understanding that preserves its dignity regarding the nuclear issue .”
