Abolfazl Zohrehvand, a member of the Iranian parliament’s National Security Committee, said on Thursday that the United States used a tactical nuclear weapon during its bombing of Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility, sparking widespread controversy in the country.
In an online interview, he explained that the Fordow facility, located beneath the mountains and encompassing more than 60 meters of rock and reinforced concrete, cannot be destroyed with conventional weapons, noting that his assessment indicates “the use of a tactical nuclear weapon by the Americans.”
Iranian MP Zohrehvand added: “I don’t think a conventional weapon could penetrate that depth and destroy the facility, which makes it likely that they used a limited nuclear weapon.”
MP Zohrvand’s recent remarks come amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington, intensifying mutual attacks, and leaks regarding sensitive facilities in Iran.
There has been no official or technical confirmation from an independent source or international organizations specializing in nuclear weapons regarding the use of nuclear weapons in the attack that occurred last June, making Representative Zohrehvand’s statement widely questioned by experts.
A tactical nuclear weapon is a type of low-yield nuclear weapon designed for use on the battlefield against specific military targets, without causing widespread destruction or significant radiation release as is the case with strategic nuclear weapons.
This type of weapon is more accurate and less destructive, and it raises ongoing international controversy over its use without triggering a full-scale nuclear war.
