An informed Iranian source revealed on Monday that the process of reopening the Strait of Hormuz will begin after the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States scheduled for next Friday, noting that disagreements over some clauses continued until the last moments before the announcement of the agreement.
The Iranian news agency Tasnim quoted the source as saying that US President Donald Trump insisted on opening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the embargo imposed on Iran simultaneously and immediately upon the announcement of the agreement, but Tehran rejected that proposal.
He added that Trump had previously announced in a tweet the opening of the strait and the lifting of the blockade simultaneously, before making an amendment to it following an Iranian warning through the Pakistani mediator, to later confirm that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would take place after Friday.
The source explained that the negotiations witnessed intensive discussions regarding the terms of the memorandum of understanding until the last minutes, noting that amendments were made to a number of the terms at the request of Iran.
He noted that the first clause of the memorandum included the addition of the phrase “guaranteeing sovereignty and respect for the unity of Lebanese territory” after an Iranian objection to the previous wording, while a text was added to the fifth clause granting Iran and the Sultanate of Oman the responsibility of “managing maritime navigation services in the Strait of Hormuz”.
The source indicated that the agreement also stipulated that transiting ships would be exempt from paying transit fees in the strait for a period of 60 days, after which Iran would begin collecting the fees.
Earlier today, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced the completion of the text of a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States, confirming that two immediate agreements would come into effect as of dawn today.
Gharibabadi told Iranian television that the negotiations had taken a long time and were mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, noting that a Qatari delegation had arrived in Iran the previous day and held talks that lasted about 15 hours.
