Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi confirmed on Sunday that Iran is prepared to consider making concessions to reach a nuclear agreement with the United States if the Americans show a willingness to discuss lifting sanctions.
In an interview with the BBC, Ravanchi added, “The ball is in America’s court to prove that it wants to reach an agreement. If they are sincere, I am confident that we will be on the path to an agreement.”
He explained that “Tehran offered to reduce uranium enrichment by 60% as proof of its willingness to make concessions, saying: ‘We are ready to discuss this and other issues related to our program if they are ready to talk about sanctions,'” but he stressed that “zero enrichment is no longer on the table, at least from Iran’s side.”
Ravanchi said: “When we were attacked by the Israelis and Americans, our missiles came to our rescue, so how can we accept depriving ourselves of our defensive capabilities?”
He continued, “We hear that they are interested in negotiations… They have said so publicly, and they have said in private talks via Oman that they want to resolve these issues peacefully.”
Ravanchi warned that “another war would be painful and bad for everyone… everyone would be harmed, especially those who initiated the aggression,” adding, “If we feel there is an existential threat, we will respond accordingly… it is not wise even to think about such a dangerous scenario, because the whole region will descend into chaos.”
He expressed hope for success “through diplomacy, although we cannot be 100% certain,” noting that Iran “must remain vigilant so as not to be surprised.”
Ravanchi’s remarks come after reports that US envoys Steve Wittkopf and Jared Kushner will hold talks with Iran on Tuesday in Geneva, with representatives from Oman acting as mediators, according to Reuters, citing a source familiar with the matter.
On Friday, US President Donald Trump expressed his support for the possibility of regime change in Iran, and announced that a “tremendous force” would soon be in the Middle East, at a time when the US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, sent a second aircraft carrier to the region.
