Iran is considering withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Tasnim International News Agency reported on Sunday, amid escalating tensions and criticism directed at the treaty’s role and those associated with it.
The agency stated that “Tehran believes that its membership in the treaty has not brought it the desired benefits in the field of developing and using peaceful nuclear energy, despite its commitment to it, in addition to its acceptance of strict monitoring procedures, including the Additional Protocol within the Iranian nuclear agreement.”
She added that “the International Atomic Energy Agency is facing increasing criticism,” accusing it of “lack of impartiality, especially following recent statements by its Director General, Rafael Grossi.”
She noted that “these developments, along with the continued regional pressures and tensions, are pushing towards the option of withdrawing from the treaty as one of the scenarios being considered in Iranian circles.”
Grossi said in an interview on CBS that “war, even if it caused great damage, could not completely end Iran’s nuclear capabilities and ambitions,” adding that this could only happen in the event of a nuclear war leading to unimaginable destruction, a scenario he said he hoped would never occur.
In the same interview, he noted that “much of Iran’s industrial capabilities, infrastructure and knowledge remain, and that the agency needs to resume field inspections to see what actually remains after the strikes.”
