A senior Iranian security source warned on Saturday that any US military operation in the Strait of Hormuz would lead to its closure “indefinitely,” with the source stating, according to the Tasnim news agency: “Any military operation carried out by the enemy in the Strait of Hormuz will lead to its complete closure indefinitely.”
The source also pointed out that if the United States were to launch a ground operation against Iran, the Islamic Republic would have a legal justification to take similar measures to counter this threat.
In his speech yesterday, US President Donald Trump sarcastically referred to the vital oil shipping route, the Strait of Hormuz, as the “Trump Strait,” a move reflecting his tone on the waterway that has become a key focus of the war.
This comment came at a time when the Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a major source of conflict in the war that began on February 28, with Iran’s ability to effectively close the strait contributing to a historic disruption of global energy supplies. The waterway typically carries 20 million barrels of oil per day.
In contrast, media reports indicated that the United States is planning to strengthen its military presence in the region by sending an additional 10,000 troops, amid fears of a possible ground operation targeting Iran’s Kharg Island, through whose ports 90% of Iranian oil exports pass.
According to CNN, Tehran is strengthening its defenses on the island in anticipation of any attack, warning that any assault on Kharg would be “more humiliating” for the aggressor than any operation in Hormuz, and vowing to turn the region’s oil and gas facilities to ashes.
