Iran announces the implementation of the “Hormuz Tariff”

Iran’s parliament announced on Sunday that the mechanism for collecting fees from ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz has entered “the actual implementation phase.”
Mohammad Zanganeh, a member of the Program and Budget Committee of the Shura Council, told the Iranian Fars News Agency that the average amount collected from each ship passing through the Strait ranges between $1.5 and $2 million, noting that this policy comes within a new management plan for the Strait that was prepared in advance by Parliament.
He pointed to the formation of a joint body in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and under the supervision of the Supreme National Security Council to implement this measure, with the revenues to be transferred to the state treasury according to specific items in the general budget.
The Iranian parliamentarian pointed out that part of the payments are not made in cash, but rather through digital currencies, goods, or the barter system, as some ships can provide goods or services in exchange for deducting their value from the fees due.
Zanganeh concluded that this measure is part of a broader plan to manage the Strait of Hormuz, the details of which were previously announced by members of parliament, where a 12-point plan was prepared to regulate the management of the strait.
