India bans ship owners from sending their sailors through the Strait of Hormuz

New Delhi has banned ship owners, operators, and recruitment companies from sending Indian sailors on voyages through the Strait of Hormuz, amid renewed fighting in the region.
The Indian Directorate General of Shipping said in an order issued late Wednesday, ” The employment of Indian seamen on board vessels undertaking voyages involving passage through the Strait of Hormuz is prohibited until further orders are issued.”
The directorate added that the latest attacks on ships have “significantly ” increased the risks faced by seafarers and merchant vessels operating in the conflict- affected area .
The order stated , “Given the escalating security situation in the Gulf region, the Directorate deems it necessary to take enhanced precautionary measures to protect the interests of Indian seamen working on board vessels operating in the region .”
The Directorate also directed ship captains to ensure sufficient caution regarding the security situation in the Gulf , the Strait of Hormuz and the waters in this region, and called for continuous monitoring of navigational warnings .
India is the world’s third largest supplier of seafarers, with government data indicating that more than 300,000 seafarers work in global shipping fleets.
Two Indian sailors have been killed in attacks on ships in the region over the past three days, as tensions escalate in the Middle East.
