US media reported on Wednesday that the FBI found classified documents last month in the office of former US National Security Advisor John Bolton in Washington.
Politico reported that this occurred during the execution of a search warrant issued by a federal court. According to an inventory of the seized documents, they included references to weapons of mass destruction, records from the US mission to the United Nations, materials related to US government strategic communications, as well as files marked “secret” and pages marked “top secret.”
She added, “On the same day, FBI agents searched Bolton’s home in Bethesda, Maryland, but the inventory revealed no classified documents, although electronic devices were seized whose contents were not disclosed.”
Court documents indicate that the investigation relates to federal crimes including violations of the Espionage Act and unauthorized retention of classified defense information.
During the administration of President Donald Trump, Bolton faced a lawsuit accusing him of revealing classified information in a book he published after leaving the administration. However, the Department of Justice closed the investigation in 2021 under the presidency of Joe Biden without filing charges.
The Justice Department released redacted versions of the search and inventory warrants after a formal media request, stating that it could not fully disclose them to protect a national security investigation.
Special Counsel Jack Smith had charged Trump with keeping classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort, before a Florida court later dismissed the case. Joe Biden was also subjected to a similar investigation into documents found at his home, which concluded without charges being filed.
