In the final meters... the balance of the presidency tilts to Al-Mashhadani after obtaining the support of the majorityShafaq News/ A parliamentary source revealed, on Saturday, the blocs supporting the coalition candidate running for the presidency of the Iraqi Parliament, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, indicating that he is the closest – according to current data – to winning the presidential seat, succeeding Muhammad Al-Halbousi, who was dismissed by a judicial decision.

The source told Shafaq News Agency, “The Taqadum, Al-Sadiqoun, Badr, State of Law, National Union, Kirkuk Governorate, and Babylon deputies, led by Rayyan Al-Kaldani, will all vote for Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani.”

The source pointed out that “the majority of Parliament is moving to vote for Al-Mashhadani as Speaker of the House of Representatives.”

A short while ago, the Iraqi Council of Representatives held its session, the agenda of which included the election of a new president to succeed the deported Muhammad al-Halbousi.

Unusually, a parliamentary source revealed “individual” meetings held by members of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, away from the calculations of the leaders of the political blocs, to choose a president for the Council.

Political circles within the corridors of the Iraqi Parliament are awaiting with great caution the session to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives, nearly half a year after the removal of its former speaker, Muhammad al-Halbousi, with differing opinions about the priority of electing Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, or Salem al-Issawi.
