A source within the coordination framework revealed on Monday details of a meeting held by the framework on Sunday, at the invitation of the head of the Supreme Islamic Council, Humam Hamoudi, and in the presence of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, to discuss the issue of banning Iranian aircraft from landing at Iraqi airports.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that “the absence of the leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, and the leader of the Badr Organization, Hadi al-Amiri, due to their own commitments, turned the supposed meeting into a consultative session between the leaders of the framework who attended.”
He explained that the Prime Minister reviewed during the meeting the most important understandings and points that he discussed with US President Donald Trump, along with some officials in the US administration, and the scenario for the next stage in light of the geopolitical and military developments taking place in the region.
The source added that the meeting discussed “the issue of the Iranian flight ban and its repercussions on Iraq, and how to cancel it,” noting that the issue will also be present at the meeting of the four presidencies scheduled to be held today.
He explained that the meeting of the four presidencies will discuss the most important issues on the Iraqi scene, regarding which Al-Zaydi received a green light to deal with them and resolve them in a way that achieves the interest of the country, noting that a second meeting of the coordination framework is expected to be held this evening, after the completion of the meeting of the four presidencies, to discuss all the important issues.
An informed political source revealed yesterday, Sunday, that the leaders of the Coordination Framework intend to hold a night meeting, in the presence of Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi, to discuss the decision to ban Iranian aircraft from landing at all Iraqi airports, and to examine its internal political and popular repercussions .
The meeting was dedicated to discussing the justifications for the government’s decision and its implications for the relationship between Baghdad and Tehran, in addition to the political and popular stances that emerged following the suspension of Iranian flights, and the possibility of addressing the repercussions of the decision through political and diplomatic channels .
The Iraqi government announced last Saturday that it would hold direct talks with the US administration to exempt some Iraqi airports from the ban on Iranian flights .
This development comes amid sanctions announced by the US Treasury Department on September 8 against 36 entities linked to the Iranian aviation sector, including 27 airlines .
The positions of travel, tourism and land transport companies in Iraq varied regarding the US sanctions imposed on Iranian airlines, which came into effect last Wednesday.
