MP Yasser Hashem considered, today, Saturday, the railway development contract signed by the Ministry of Transport as the “theft of the century” in Iraq.
Hashem said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “The Iraqi government will give the company implementing the project 22 billion dollars in addition to oil or one of the natural resources to build iron cars only,” indicating that “the Ministry of Transport has assigned the same implementing company to operate it for 43 years, and this is a disaster.”
He added, “This contract will mortgage the railways to the private sector and will cause great harm to this sector, in addition to Iraq losing a lot of money, at a rate that may reach 90 percent,” describing “this theft as the theft of the era in Iraq.”
He explained that “this is a corrupt deal that the thieves of the century and the thieves of the era have cooperated on, and their efforts have combined to mortgage the country’s resources in this way,” noting that “the work expected to be implemented under this contract includes only 700 kilometers.”
He added: “A minister cannot sign such large sums, and therefore a thousand question marks are raised about what is happening in the management of state funds.”
The head of the Integrity Commission, Judge Haider Hanoun, stirred public opinion by announcing the discovery of a waste of money as part of the theft of the century in the $18 billion railway development contract, while parliamentarians described this contract as humiliating and illegal.
