The leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Ghiath Surji, confirmed that the data of the Federal Election Commission differs from the data of the previous Kurdistan Commission by 400 thousand votes, who were voting for the Democratic Party.
“Most of the officials in the previous Kurdistan Region Election Commission were from the Democratic Party, and it relied on invalid votes, including votes from thousands of deceased people and Kurds from Syria, Turkey and Iran. The total number of invalid votes was 400,000,” Surji said in a press interview.
He added, “All these privileges that the Democratic Party used to benefit from are what made it lead in the elections. Now, the situation has changed, and we will not accept the participants to be in the government only. Rather, we want to be partners.”
He pointed out that “the Democratic Party previously imposed its style on the blocs, and controlled parliament by majority and imposed all decisions and laws without referring to the other parties.”
The Kurds will head to the polls on October 20, 2024, to elect their representatives in the Kurdistan Regional Parliament, amid indications of declining participation rates, similar to what is happening in the parliamentary elections and local elections in the rest of the Iraqi governorates, according to Kurdish observers.
The campaigns began on September 25 and ended on October 15, 48 hours before the special vote for security forces, police and prisons, which will be held on October 18.
