On Monday, Axios revealed that negotiations between Iran and the United States will begin next Friday in Istanbul, Turkey.
The website quoted sources who informed it that White House envoy Steve Wittkopf will meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on Friday in Istanbul to discuss a possible nuclear agreement.
This is the first meeting between American and Iranian officials since the collapse of negotiations and the 12-day war in the middle of last year, and it comes amid a massive American military buildup in the Gulf, and US President Donald Trump’s insistence that the only way to avoid military conflict is to reach a quick agreement .
On Monday, the foreign ministers of Turkey and Egypt spoke again with Araqchi to discuss the possibility of holding a meeting , and Iranian state media reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian had ordered the resumption of negotiations with the Trump administration .
Araghchi said that Iran is ready for diplomacy, adding, “But diplomacy is not compatible with pressure, intimidation, and force. We hope that its results will become clear soon .”
The website noted that the Trump administration’s demand that any agreement with Iran include points related to the Iranian nuclear program, missile program, and regional proxies contradicts the Iranian position that only the nuclear issue is on the table .
