On Thursday, the new Iranian Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, delivered his first speech after succeeding his father, Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated in an American strike. In it, he outlined the lines of war and the relationship with Iran’s neighbors and internal affairs, and addressed the issues of “resistance” in the region.
The speech included 7 points, the first of which was a condolence for the assassination of his father, and the second in which he stressed that “the unity between the individuals and groups of the people, which usually manifests itself in times of hardship, must not be marred, and this is achieved by overlooking points of disagreement.”
He continued in the third point: We must maintain an influential presence on the ground, whether through the actions you demonstrated during these days and nights of war, or through the various impactful roles you play in the social, political, educational, cultural, and even security spheres. The important thing is to understand the correct role and implement it to the best of our ability without compromising social unity. It is the duty of the leadership and other officials to remind individuals and groups within society of these roles. From this perspective, I emphasize the importance of attending the Quds Day ceremonies, where the objective of “defeating the enemy” must be the focus of everyone’s attention.
He continued in his fourth point: Do not neglect to help and support one another. This has always been the characteristic of most Iranians, and it is expected that during these difficult times, which are proving more challenging for some than others, this demand will be even more evident. On this occasion, I urge all service agencies to spare no effort in providing any assistance to these dear people and to the popular relief organizations.
Regarding the “resistance,” Khamenei stated: ” I extend my deepest gratitude to the mujahideen of the Resistance Front. We consider the countries of the Resistance Front to be our dearest friends, and the cause of resistance and its front is an integral part of the values of the Islamic Revolution. Undoubtedly, the unity of the components of this front shortens the path to liberation from the Zionist conspiracy. We have seen that the courageous and faithful Yemen has not ceased defending the oppressed people of Gaza, and the self-sacrificing Hezbollah has rushed to the aid of the Islamic Republic despite all obstacles, and the valiant Iraqi resistance has followed the same path with utmost courage.”
He continued in the fifth point: “I assure everyone that we will not relinquish our vengeance for the blood of your martyrs. The vengeance we seek is not limited to the martyrdom of the great leader of the revolution, but every individual martyred at the hands of the enemy represents a separate case in the file of revenge. Of course, a limited part of this revenge has been tangibly achieved so far, but what has not been completed will remain above all other files, and we will be especially sensitive to the blood of our children.”
He pointed out that “to the extent that the current situation allows, sufficient and specific measures must be taken to compensate for the financial losses incurred to places and personal property. These last two resources are a duty to be carried out by the respected officials, and they must carry it out and report on it to me,” adding, “The point that must be noted is that in any case we will take compensation from the enemy, and if he refuses, we will take from his money as much as we see fit, and if that is not possible, we will destroy from his money and property to the same extent,” as stated in the sixth section.
In the final part of his speech, he addressed the leaders and influential figures in some countries of the region: “We share borders with 15 countries, both by land and sea, and we have always desired and continue to desire warm and constructive relations with all of them. However, for many years, the enemy has been gradually establishing military and financial bases in some of these countries to secure its control over the region. In the recent attack, some of these military bases were used, and we, in turn—as we explicitly warned—attacked only those bases without targeting those countries. From now on, we will be compelled to continue doing so, even though we still believe in the necessity of friendship between us and these neighbors.”
