US President Donald Trump denied a report published by the Axios website regarding his readiness to ease sanctions on Iran and release frozen Iranian funds, and demanded that the website withdraw the report.
Trump said in a post on TruthSocial: “Axios just published a report claiming that I offered Iran sanctions relief and the release of frozen funds. This is false. I offered them nothing at all.”
The report was described as “pure fabrication,” and the website was accused of spreading “fake news,” with the demand that it “immediately withdraw this false story.”
Axios had quoted US officials as saying that Trump was prepared to discuss easing sanctions and releasing frozen funds in exchange for concrete Iranian steps related to its nuclear program.
The report spoke of a conditional offer within the framework of indirect communications, and did not mention the issuance of a decision to lift the sanctions.
The report came amid efforts by mediators from Qatar and Pakistan to bring Washington and Tehran closer together, after Trump rejected an Iranian proposal that focused on the Strait of Hormuz, the naval blockade, and sanctions on oil sales.
