Political analyst Mukhlid Hazem confirmed that former Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi is insisting on exclusively submitting his name for the speakership through his party, Taqaddum.
Hazem told Al-Maalouma that “the Sunni Council may resort to the national arena to resolve the crisis surrounding the nomination for the speakership, in a move seen as an attempt to overcome internal divisions.” He explained that “the Sunni bloc is seeking to make the speakership an open option for other political blocs, which could weaken the role of its current leaders and increase the likelihood of their influence declining in the political landscape.”
He added that “there is widespread rejection of al-Halbousi’s candidacy from several blocs, further complicating the current political scene.” He warned that “the Sunni Council will enter the second phase of internal conflicts that could lead to its political demise, given the continued disagreements and conflicts among its leaders.”
He pointed out that “the current phase requires overcoming past disputes and conflicts,” emphasizing that “the first parliamentary session will be decisive between the rivals regarding the speakership and will determine the course of the next phase.”
These developments come at a time of escalating political pressure on various parties to successfully form the parliamentary leadership bodies, amid expectations that the coming days will witness further intensive deliberations and consultations.
