Shafaq News/ The Independent newspaper reported on Monday that supporters of California’s secession from the United States of America have received the green light to take the next steps towards “California’s exit” or what has become known as Calexit.
According to the British newspaper, the residents of the US state of California can now vote on secession from the United States as early as 2028, after organizers obtained official permission to begin collecting signatures on the initiative.
State Secretary of State Shirley Weber announced Thursday that the move’s lead proponent, Marcus Ruiz Evans, must collect at least 546,651 voter signatures, or 5 percent of the total votes the governor collected in the November 2022 general election, in order to be included on the November 2028 ballot.
Evans said he has until July 22, 2025, to submit the signatures to county election officials. Evans’ website says California’s exit means its laws are set by the people of California, not unelected bureaucrats in Washington.
“This means we have a government that begins and ends at the California border, and it means no more money being taken from California taxpayers,” Evans said in a statement, adding that it means the state will decide its own fate for the first time.
Marcus Ruiz Evans is one of Donald Trump’s fiercest opponents, and has been seeking secession since 2012.
California, the most populous state in the United States, has the fifth-largest economy in the world, according to the International Monetary Fund.
