The Prime Minister’s advisor for security affairs, Hussein Allawi, announced that the international coalition’s mission in Baghdad and Anbar provinces will end this September.
Allawi told the official agency that “the government is working to end his duties and transfer relations to the level of joint bilateral relations, whether with the United States of America or with the countries of the international coalition, including NATO.” He pointed out that “a timetable has been set for this transition in accordance with a joint statement issued in September 2024, which is documented on the website of the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the website of the US State Department.”
He pointed out that “the missions of the international coalition in Baghdad and Anbar will end this September and transition to bilateral relations.” He explained that “during the meeting that took place between the Prime Minister and the commander of the US Central Command, the path to transferring missions and understanding towards bilateral relations was clearly indicated, and this is what we are working on.”
He stated that “the missions of the international coalition advisors in the Kurdistan Region will be transferred in 2026, and this is what is currently being worked on.”
Baghdad and Washington had reached an official date at the end of September 2024 to end the mission of the international coalition against ISIS in the country, not later than the end of September 2025.
The two countries held rounds of dialogue that extended for months.
The United States has about 2,500 troops in Iraq.
